Vestibular Physiotherapy.
UC Physio physiotherapists Jessica and Cassie have undergone further training to offer assessment and treatment of vestibular conditions. The vestibular system is important for maintaining balance and vision when moving such as moving from lying to sitting and walking. The vestibular system has a central component (brain) and a peripheral component (inner ear). When there is dysfunction of the vestibular system it can cause dizziness, nausea, vertigo, feelings of imbalance/unsteadiness on your feet, blurred vision, disequilibrium, cognitive fog, headaches, and neck complaints.
What to expect
Vestibular rehabilitation consists of a thorough assessment including comprehensive history of current and past episodes. The physical assessment consists of looking at eye movements, coordination of head and eye movements, positional testing, neck testing and a balance assessment. You will then be advised of the most appropriate therapy for your presentation. Often this involves prescription of appropriate exercises to complete at home. These exercises may need to be progressed as your condition changes all with the aim of improving your symptoms.
Vestibular conditions can include (but is not limited to):
BPPV
Vestibular neuritis
Meniere’s disease
Vestibular migraine
Persistent postural perceptual dizziness (PPPD)
Concussion
Vestibular schwannoma/Acoustic Neuroma
Vestibular hypofunction/imbalance related to aging
Vestibular symptoms related to a central nervous system condition for example, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Cerebral Palsy, Stroke etc.
Due to the complexity of vestibular conditions our highly qualified staff require initial assessments of 45 minutes to ensure appropriate assessments are completed. For this reason please call to make appointments as our standard online booking time is not long enough to fully complete our assessments. If you are unsure, we suggest that you call the office and speak to our reception staff on 55 618 111.
